From the world stage to the local stage: Donaghys Southern Ocean performs everywhere
It’s been an exemplary year for customers of Donaghys Southern Ocean. From Ericsson 4’s victory in the Volvo Ocean Race, and new 24-hour speed record achieved enroute to CapeTown, to Emirates Team New Zealand’s firm leadership of the Audi MedCup series, boats fully rigged with Donaghys Southern Ocean performance yachting braids have truly made their mark.
Ericsson 4 crossed the finish line of the Volvo Ocean Race in St Petersburg, Russia on 27th June 2009. Skipper Torben Grael and the International crew aboard Ericsson 4 won overall with the final score of 114.5 points. Magnus Olsson’s Nordic crew on Ericsson 3, also rigged with Donaghys braids, placed fourth with 78.5 points.
“There’ve been plenty of high moments,” said Grael, 48. “I think the high moments were the record period and all the leg wins, getting to the harbor with everybody celebrating and cheering. Going around Cape Horn is always a fantastic thing. Especially, we went around with lots of wind and marginal conditions. It’s a feeling of achievement when you go around the Cape. Emirates Team New Zealand are also performing very well in the Audi MedCup series in the TP52 yachts, currently at the top of the table after the Alicante, Marseille and Sardinia Trophy regattas. Matador (ARG) is second overall and Quantum (USA), the defending Med Cup champion, third. The next regattas is the Portugal Trophy which takes place from 18 – 23 August 2009.
